Adding Asian decorations to your home can be one of the best ways to make things more exotic. In general, this type of design and style offers balance and tranquility. This is especially the case when you add the right elements. By having the right pieces you can bring visitors into a whole new world of adventure.

Probably the two most popular types of Asian design are the Japanese, and Chinese styles. Depending on what you are going for, one may work better for you than another. One of the main reasons for this has to do with how one of the Asian decorations involve more of a bold statement, while the other has to do more with a relaxing effect.

Chinese Design

Overall, Asian decorations consisting of a Chinese background have to do more with bold and dramatic colors. Essentially, black represents the female energy and red represents a male’s energy. In addition, these types of Asian decorations tend to have a lot of phoenix and dragon motifs. Generally, a folding screen works as a divider and provides privacy, while colored paper lamps illuminate the room and lend to the overall atmosphere. As for the furniture, it usually entails pieces, which are painted and lacquered, along with ornate carvings.

Decorating Tips

One way to incorporate Chinese Design involves painting a red accent wall. On the other hand, you could also paint the room gold and apply a red glaze following its application. In addition, if you have someone in your family good at painting murals, consider having them paint a dragon. Some Asian decorations to consider are things such as black furniture, along with red accents. Additionally, a folding screen makes a nice compliment to a room such as this.

Japanese Design

On the other hand, Japanese design consists of more of a Zen style. It aims to calm by incorporating natural elements of Asian decorations within its style. Usually, most colors consist of colors such as grey, green, tan, and white blended together with rice paper and bamboo. For the most part, the furniture consists of a simple style, which is low to the ground. In most cases, this is the best type of style to incorporate within a modern styled room. One of the main features of the Japanese Design is the contrast of texture. Generally, the design has one bold focal point, along with subtle hints throughout. One of the most important things is blank space, which is imperative for creating the feeling of peace and sense of space.

Decorating Tips

When you are trying to create Japanese style, consider adding some asian decorations such as silk hung on the wall. In addition, Tatami mats are another nice addition as well. As for furniture, futons work well within this type of style. In addition, water fountains add to the sense of peace the style is known for. Overall, one of the main things to consider is how less is more with the Japanese style.

Overall, when you are choosing Asian decorations, always consider the current style of the room you plan to add the piece to. In addition, try to choose one type of theme and stick with it. Otherwise, you risk having things look scattered and messy.

Japanese decorations are not only popular in Asian countries, but all over the world as well. Many people appreciate the style and feel of Japanese decorations. If you have been thinking of redesigning a room or several rooms in your home with a Japanese theme there are many different items you can include to help create a nice theme.

Oriental Wall Fans

You’ve probably seen the smaller versions of oriental fans but they are available in a wide variety of sizes making them the perfect wall or table decoration. These precious fans are hand-painted in many different oriental designs. Large fans are approximately 60 inches wide and over 30 inches high while the smaller wall fans are approximately 40 inches wide and over 20 inches high. Depending on how much wall space you have, there is surely an oriental wall fan that you can easily appreciate.

Shoji Screens

Shoji screens, sometimes also known as simply room dividers, are used to close off areas or to provide a division from two different rooms. They can also just simply be used as Japanese decorations. You can find them in patterns that include cherry blossoms, bamboo silhouettes or different geometric shapes. Shoji screens will add style and character to any area that they’re placed in. They are most commonly available in 3 to 6 panels depending on the style and size that you desire for the space you have to work with.

Umbrellas, Parasols

Umbrellas come in a huge variety of sizes making them useful for outdoor patio tables or indoor Japanese decorations. You can place them in a decorative vase or use them as a beautiful centerpiece. The umbrellas are available in waterproof styles and can be used indoors or outdoors. The parasols and paper umbrellas tend to be fragile if the paper is thin so use caution when deciding on where you’ll be placing them.

Japanese Bonsai Trees

You can’t possibly think of Japanese design without imaging a Japanese Bonsai tree. These are beautiful plants that can be used to enhance the look and style of any room. They are most commonly used in living rooms, family rooms and other popular living areas but can easily be used in any room you choose including the bathroom or kitchen. You can choose from real versions or if you are into low-maintenance you might appreciate the artificial versions which look just like the real thing.

Paper Lanterns and Lamps

The soft glow that radiates from paper lamps and lanterns is an easy way to add ambience to any room in your home or even outside on a patio or entry way. You’ll find them most commonly made of paper and bamboo in a variety of different colors, designs and styles. Warm colors like reds, oranges and yellows are particularly common but you can find them in blues, purples and a host of other colors as well.

In this day in age, it seems that one of the most popular interior styles is Japanese Home Decor. Which makes me think – why all the fuss?

The first reason is the concept behind it. While many western themes have a concept of regality or splendor, the concept behind Japanese style is simplicity; elegance without affluence; space; peace; and above all, that concept that Westerners love to embrace so much these days (even if they don’t completely understand it), harmony.

The harmony in Japanese tradition ages back literally thousands of years. Anyone who has ever experienced Japanese culture knows why there is a distinct difference in the names of “Westerners” and “Easterners”. It really is a completely different concept and way of life.

While Westerners struggle to better themselves individually, competing against their peers, the Japanese concept is to work together, as a team, to reach a common goal. As it is in Japanese Home Decor: A number of items in the room work together to achieve the overall sought-after feelings of peace, serenity, and harmony. None are in particular outstanding – they all add a little something of their own, which as a single entity creates the desired feeling.

In this modern day in age, we are all seeking a place that is welcoming, and comforting. Japanese Home decor allows this, by providing a relaxing space in which to unwind.

Room screen dividers are traditionally from Asia, but are now incorporated into homes around the world for a variety of purposes.

One might think that room screen dividers are only used in an ornamental way, however the origins of room screen dividers lie in the name – as a means of separating or dividing a room which otherwise has no dividing wall. It is interesting that there are a number of different styles of room screen dividers, in a number of different materials.

Bamboo room screen dividers are often simple, lightweight screens, which add the feng shui element of wood into the home. The feeling of wood in your home brings a sense of peace and tranquility.

Some room screen dividers are decorated with extravagant designs, such as mythical creatures like dragons, dramatic landscapes of misty mountains and flowing rivers, and other times, with extremely lush, colourful designs of foliage, forests etc. All of these designs add their own distinctive feeling or ambience to the room in which they are in, and the level of extravagance of the pattern on the screen is often directly related to the level of emotion one feels from the screen; ie. A dramatic pattern often causes a more overwhelming feeling, while a simple, subdued pattern exudes much more of a feeling of calm into your abode.

Japanese shoji screens are perhaps the most common and popular type of room screen dividers around the world. Typically, the paper is very plain in style, as is the colour, which is in alignment with the Japanese interior home decor theory in general, which encourages minimalism in every way. To stand out is generally looked down upon in Japan, which results in much of their interior style being very subtle. Shoji screens add harmony to any abode, and must be considered when choosing from the variety of screens available.

Whatever type of screen you choose, ensure that it fits in with the rest of the furniture in the room you are decorating. If you get an extravagant screen, ensure the room is painted in extravagant colours too. Likewise, a subdued screen would go well in a subtly coloured room.

Good luck in your quest for the perfect room screen dividers!

The idea behind oriental style is that it is simple, minimalist, and calm. Good Oriental Home Decor should exude a feeling of “zen”. It’s important to use space effectively – don’t clutter spaces, as that completely ruins the mood – keep it simple, spacious, and make sure that the colours you use are also soothing. Dull colours, not too bright and intense, are best – although, interestingly, red is a typical colour which is also often used (even though it can often represent aggression in western-style decorated homes).  Generally, darker browns, mixed with light beiges etc. give the calming effect best.

There are so many different types of oriental home décor. Basically, the term “oriental” encompasses every country from India, eastward – with major influences coming from China, Japan, South-East Asia etc. Oriental home decor includes:

a) Items which go on walls, such as masks, prints, or wall hangings / scrolls etc.,

b) Items which go on floors such as coffee tables, chairs, bamboo furniture etc., and

c) Items which are placed on mantles, side tables etc., such as statues, vases, sake / tea sets etc.

Another interesting thing about oriental interior décor is how popular it has become these days. It is fast becoming on of the most influential styles of modern times. In the past it was quite unique, but now it has blended into western stlye in a kind of fusion style which is all the rage now.  Why?  Essentially, because of the feeling of peace. In today’s times, after a hard, busy day, we all want to come home to a place which makes us feel good, and more importantly, relaxed. The lack of clutter and effective use of space in oriental home décor is a perfect fit for these emotions.

There are so many Oriental countries which have unique and beautiful furniture and decor, it’s hard to know where to start. The best thing to do would be to start by searching through magazines / online etc. to give you an idea of what’s out there.  Then you have to start the long and arduous process of sourcing all the individual items you want, making them match and work together, and blend them into your current style / furniture at home. It would be so nice if someone else could just help to do all this for you – give you a whole look in a single package…

Oriental home décor is fashionable, and also, thankfully not too expensive. There are many expensive items out there, but usually also cheaper alternatives which look nice enough (to the untrained eye). Before selecting anything though, be sure that you also take into account the meaning / significance of the object you purchase. I have seen many people displaying what they think are beautiful Chinese or Japanese characters, but which actually have meanings which are completely inappropriate for a home setting. Popular characters include elemental themes such as water etc., or peace, harmony, light, comfort, tranquility etc.

Good luck with your search for the perfect Oriental look for your home – if done well, it will certainly bring you lots of comfort and pleasure!
